F.A.Q.
- What does a doula do exactly?
- A doula provided informational, physical, and emotional support during the prenatal period.
- Why would I hire a Doula when the baby’s going to be born either way?
- It’s true - no matter what you choose to do, the baby is going to come out. I have heard this question a lot. However, we put a lot of emphasis on the birth of a baby but what about the birth of the mother? In the least, we should not discount the woman’s experience. I can’t guarantee everything will go according to plan, just as I cannot predict the weather, but you should really prepare for your desired outcome. Childbirth is really a huge life event, so when you invest in a doula, you are investing in yourself.
- Why the Birth Sherpa?
- I searched for the most appropriate name to describe the role I play as a doula. One might hire a sherpa to accompany you on the mountain. But the sherpa cannot make this journey for you. This is a perfect analogy for the role as a doula.
- Why does it cost so much for a professional hand-holder?
There have been many studies done that prove using a doula not only increases satisfaction but also improves outcomes. It has been called the Doula Effect:
- 25% shorter labor
- 60% reduction in Epidural request
- 50% reduction in cesarean rate
- 40% reduction in Oxytocin use
- 30% reduction in analgesia use
- ...In births attended by a Doula.
- My significant other is my birth partner, do I really need a doula?
- Yes. The doula’s role is not to take the place of, but to help, the partner. When our significant others become our birth partners, they really take on a huge job. Watching your loved one go through childbirth is a unique experience. Magical, yes, but also probably not something they are prepared for. A doula can help your partner to feel comfortable with their experience and also be reassured that they are doing it right. As a Doula, I strive to have the partner be as involved as they want to be. Sometimes this means I am less hands-on and more of a dance coordinator. And sometimes the partner needs a break to eat or rest and I will be there to relieve them. There’s no wrong answer in how much support the partner provides but with a Doula then the mother is supported no matter what.
- What kind of things do you do as a Postpartum Doula?
- An example of what I do is: Bring a meal, light tidying, baby help, cloth diaper assistance, and a lot of listening. If there are older siblings, I can help with them too. I am very flexible.
- Is a doula covered under insurance?
- In the Netherlands some insurance providers reimburse at least partly for a doula who is registered with the NBvD. It never hurts to call your insurance and ask!
- What if I can’t afford a doula?
- If you feel you need a doula but can’t afford one, then contact me and I’ll see what I can do to help you.
